Networked low-latency audio in the wild: crossing the LAN boundary

Audio over IP (AoIP) and Audio over Ethernet (AoE) protocols are nowadays robust and often codified into standards like AES67. However, they cannot be used straight away to stream audio outside the boundaries of a Local Area Network (LAN).

While there are multiple products that are capable of establishing low-latency, high-quality audio connections in a Wide Area Network (WAN) such as the Internet, we are still far from having a standard in this area.

This talk will give an overview of all the challenges in making live remote musical performances possible over the Internet, e.g.:
  • How can we establish a direct connection over multiple layers of NAT?
  • How can we handle lost packets?
  • What are the technical implications of varying latency and jitter for a musical performance?
  • How can the stream be securely encrypted?

The talk will provide established references to be used for further investigation, and several examples from open-source and commercial applications.
